Estill County Regional Career and Technical Center: Updates and Information

Several weeks ago, the Estill County School District received confirmation that our grant application for the Work Ready Skills Initiative (WRSI) was approved and the district was awarded $5.7 million to build a Regional Career and Technical Center.   As superintendent, I wanted to give you a quick update on our progress and talk about several questions that have arisen since the approval of our grant.

Summer Food Service Program

Estill County Schools is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals will be provided, at a first come, first serve basis, at the sites and times as follows:

KENTUCKY BOARD OF EDUCATION DISCUSSES ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM

The proposed accountability system was discussed at the June 7 Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) meeting. The following is a summary from the meeting published in The Kentucky Teacher and sent to superintendents in the Commissioner’s Monday Message on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. District Assessment Coordinators (DACs) may find this important information of interest.

The Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA) named Estill County Schools staff member, Felicia Campbell as the recipient of the prestigious, statewide Wanda Luttrell Office Professional Award.

Special Called Board Meeting

There will be a special called board meeting on Tuesday, May 16th @ 12pm.


Meeting is for the purpose of discussing WRSI Grant and the construction of the Regional Career Tech Center. 

Attendance Incentive Bicycle Winners

O. D. Henderson Lodge #437 F&AM donated another 2 bicycles and the Irvine Chapter of Eastern Star donated another set of helmets to be drawn for as an attendance incentive. Representing O. D. Henderson Lodge is Terry Kirby and Greg Horn. O. D. Henderson Lodge has now donated 6 bicycles this school year to be used as an attendance incentive.

Parents can now check their childs ILP progress

Students can now access to their childs ILP by contacting the school for a parent access code. The  Individual Learning Plan or ILP is a student specific program or strategy of education or learning that takes into consideration the student's strengths and weaknesses.

Passing of Brock Sims

It is with a heavy heart that I notify our community of the passing of Brock Sims, Principal of South Irvine P-K Center.  Mr. Sims was loved by his students, staff, co-workers, parents and community. His big smile and jovial personality will be missed by everyone, but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of this entire community.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jodi, his parents, and his entire family. 

Grief counselors will be in our district tomorrow to meet the needs of our students and staff.  Parents who need to speak with someone can contact their child’s school and someone will be available to assist you.

As Engineers, we take pride in taking care of each other.  In the coming days, we will lean on each other to make sure we are meeting the needs of our staff and students.

The 9 weeks grading period will be extended two days and will end on Tuesday, March 7.  

School Closing

Due to storm damage throughout our community and out of respect for our displaced families, there will be no school in the Estill County School System for the remainder of the week. 

Friday will be a staff work day for all employees.  Everyone should report to their respective work sites at 8:30am. 

School will be in session on Monday, March 6th on regular schedule.

President's Day - No School

In observance of Presidents Day, there will be no school on Monday, February 20th.  However, we will have a staff work day.

Whooping Cough - Update

Dear Parents or Guardians:

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue to monitor and handle the current whooping cough situation.  Our goal is to keep you informed as much as possible, so we can manage this to the best of our abilities.  We have had sporadic cases still identified so please continue to observe your student and follow preventative measures listed below.

Grandparents as Parents Conference

Becoming the primary provider for a grandchild can be difficult and you are not alone.

The 15th annual Grandparents As Parents (GAP) conference is Thursday, March 16th, 2017 at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington, KY. Grandparents, caregivers, relatives, and professionals are invited to attend. The Estill County Grandparents United local support program for grandparents raising grandchildren meets every third Thursday at 11:30am in the  basement of Wisemantown Methodist. Please join us.

ECMS students competed in the District Governor's Cup Competition. The Quick Recall team placed second in the District. The FPS team also placed 2nd in the District.

 

Middle School Yearbooks

Today is ECMS's last day to order yearbooks with special features.  If you have not ordered, go online to www.jostens.com!  Make sure you select Estill County Middle School, Irvine, KY.  Plain yearbooks will be sold in lunch on Monday and Tuesday of next week for $30.  Don't delay!

Cell Phone Surplus - Seal Bid Auction Closed - Results

The Estill County School District has several surplus cell phones that are up for sealed bidding.  Bidding forms are available at the Estill County Board of Education front desk and can be picked/submitted between the hours of 8:00AM-3:00PM, January 27, 2017 – February 3, 2017. 

Whooping Cough Information

Dear Parents or Guardians:

West Irvine Elementary has had two confirmed cases of pertussis or whooping cough reported. Pertussis is a respiratory infection that is easily spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. Its severe cough can last for weeks or months, sometimes leading to coughing fits and/or vomiting.

Infinite Campus Parent Portal Issue Resolved

Issue with parent portal app has been resolved.

To fix:

  1. Open parent portal app.
  2. Click Log out.  You must log out before going to step 3.
  3. Delete the app.
  4. Reinstall the app.
  5. Log back in.
  6. URL Code for re-registration is:  HQSMVY

That should work in most cases.

The Kentucky Department of Education and Valvoline Inc., sponsors of the Kentucky Teacher Awards, have adopted a new schedule for the awards. The new timetable will provide the Teacher of the Year more flexibility in taking a sabbatical and preparing for the national Teacher of the Year awards.

Cheerleaders

The Estill County Middle School Cheerleaders won their Region Competition on November 20, 2016 in Breathitt County.  They compete in the Middle School State Competition on December 17, 2016 at the All-Tech Arena in Lexington, KY.  The start time of the competition is 9:00.  ECMS competes until 11:25.  Please come out and support these girls.  They have worked so hard on their routine.  Thanks.

Veteran's Day Happy Veteran's Day Picture

On this Veterans Day, the Estill County School District would like to thank the men and women of this great nation who have served in the military.  Also, Estill County has a proud tradition of men and women who have served in the armed forces defending our country.  Today we honor their service as well as all veterans across this great nation.

ECHS JRTOC Raider Team now 17th in Nation! 2016 JROTC Nationals Team Picture

The ECHS JROTC Raider Team competed at the National Competition on November 5th and 6th. The Raiders competed in events such as: 5k run, Physical Team Test, Gauntlet, Cross Country Rescue, and Rope Bridge.

No School - Monday & Tuesday

This is a reminder that there will be no school for students, in Estill County on Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th.  Monday is a teacher Equivalency Day.  All staff should report to their work locations.  Tuesday is Election Day, so please go out and exercise your right to vote.

Football Game Spectacular!

If you can't think of anything to do Friday night, we've got you covered! Come out to the Estill County High School Football game on Friday night to root for your ECHS "District Champ" Engineers take on Jackson County. Also cheer with the 14th Region Champ Cheerleaders to root our players on! Then watch the ECHS Engineer Marching band put on an unbelievable show that won them the CLASS 2A KENTUCKY STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP! You will NOT want to miss all the excitement!

Free Paraeducator Course & Certification

Free Paraeducator Class and Certification.  The Estill County Adult Learning Center will offer paraeducator classes/certification beginning November 15, 2016.  This certificate will allow you to work in any school system across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

South Irvine wins the Attendance Banner in a David vs Goliath type upset. This is the first time in recent memory that South has taken the banner, so congratulations all around! High Attendance Day

Tuesday, 09/20/2016, is high attendance day across the state of Kentucky. Each of our schools will be competing against other schools in a regional and overall state competition. Last year, Estill County High School won region within their division, and West Irvine, barely missed in their category. Lets put Estill County on the map tomorrow and sweep this competition at the elementary, intermediate, middle and high school levels. In order to win, we need every student, parent, and guardian to make the commitment to be at school tomorrow, on time, and ready to learn. Go Engineers!

Latest Results from Testing at the Blue Ridge Landfill

Over the past 6 months, CHFS, EEC, and others have collected and analyzed a great deal of data, and have jointly concluded that there is no evidence to suggest that waste containing TENORM disposed at the Blue Ridge Landfill has impacted any areas outside the landfill.

ECMS Students Maintaining 99.5% Attendance Rate!

This is a picture of every ECMS student with exemplary attendance along with Mrs. Williams and Mrs Rawlins. Shaelyn Parsons is the student who came up with the idea of making a banner for each school to honor students who maintained a 99.5% attendance rate for the 2015-2016 school year. The banner will be displayed in the hallway at ECMS during the upcoming year.

Community Partners - Thank You

On Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Estill County High School, our staff participated in an “All Aboard” – Opening Day Celebration.  We were humbled by the number of community partners and vendors who participated and made the event a success.

Transportation Department Meeting

All transportation personnel should be aware that an 8-Hour Update training will be held this Thursday, July 28th.  Drivers will be involved from 8:00–5:00.

The training will be held in the High School auditorium, with donuts and coffee being served beginning at 7:30.  The training will begin promptly at 8:00.  Lunch will be provided.

Bus Assistants should report at 1:00.
