Congratulations Raider Team!

Congratulations to the ECHS JROTC Raider team who took top place finish at the Tri-State Competition at Boonesboro.

Teams from TN, Ky and Oh were represented and the cadets not only beat the other states they had the fastest time ever recorded on the Mountain Trek race and the River Run Race eclipsing the 2013 Championship Team.

ECHS FBLA Competition

The Estill County High School FBLA competed in FBLA Region 6 Competition on March 9th, at EKU along with 720 students form other schools.

They had 48 students that competed in 17 events out of 72! All represented Estill County very well. However, some students brought the hardware of trophies home.

Passing of Brock Sims

It is with a heavy heart that I notify our community of the passing of Brock Sims, Principal of South Irvine P-K Center.  Mr. Sims was loved by his students, staff, co-workers, parents and community. His big smile and jovial personality will be missed by everyone, but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of this entire community.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jodi, his parents, and his entire family. 

Grief counselors will be in our district tomorrow to meet the needs of our students and staff.  Parents who need to speak with someone can contact their child’s school and someone will be available to assist you.

As Engineers, we take pride in taking care of each other.  In the coming days, we will lean on each other to make sure we are meeting the needs of our staff and students.

Due to storm damage throughout our community and out of respect for our displaced families, there will be no school in the Estill County School System for the remainder of the week. 

Friday will be a staff work day for all employees.  Everyone should report to their respective work sites at 8:30am. 

School will be in session on Monday, March 6th on regular schedule.

Whooping Cough - Update

Dear Parents or Guardians:

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue to monitor and handle the current whooping cough situation.  Our goal is to keep you informed as much as possible, so we can manage this to the best of our abilities.  We have had sporadic cases still identified so please continue to observe your student and follow preventative measures listed below.

Grandparents as Parents Conference

Becoming the primary provider for a grandchild can be difficult and you are not alone.

The 15th annual Grandparents As Parents (GAP) conference is Thursday, March 16th, 2017 at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington, KY. Grandparents, caregivers, relatives, and professionals are invited to attend. The Estill County Grandparents United local support program for grandparents raising grandchildren meets every third Thursday at 11:30am in the  basement of Wisemantown Methodist. Please join us.

Dear Parents,

Your child recently completed an in-school assessment using CERT, the College Equipped Readiness Tool.  The assessment, which is aligned with the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards, was designed to measure your child’s proficiency in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science.  Below is information intended to help you better understand the results of this assessment and any previous assessments.

Cell Phone Surplus - Seal Bid Auction Closed - Results

The Estill County School District has several surplus cell phones that are up for sealed bidding.  Bidding forms are available at the Estill County Board of Education front desk and can be picked/submitted between the hours of 8:00AM-3:00PM, January 27, 2017 – February 3, 2017. 

Whooping Cough Information

Dear Parents or Guardians:

West Irvine Elementary has had two confirmed cases of pertussis or whooping cough reported. Pertussis is a respiratory infection that is easily spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. Its severe cough can last for weeks or months, sometimes leading to coughing fits and/or vomiting.

Infinite Campus Parent Portal Issue Resolved

Issue with parent portal app has been resolved.

To fix:

  1. Open parent portal app.
  2. Click Log out.  You must log out before going to step 3.
  3. Delete the app.
  4. Reinstall the app.
  5. Log back in.
  6. URL Code for re-registration is:  HQSMVY

That should work in most cases.

Malfunctioning One Call

Attention Parents:  The one call that was initiated for the high school stating that your child was absent or tardy today was a malfunction.  The incorrect list was chosen for the call.  Please disregard the call.  Another follow up call stating this issue is being resent to all students

The Future Business Leaders of America invite the entire community to Light Up Rivertown.  The celebration will be held Saturday, November 19th 2016 at Estill County Court House.

Several of our students at ECHS attended the annual HOT (Health Occupations Today) Expo on November 2 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset KY.

ECHS Students Attend STOMP Performance!  The students pictured were able to attend the Broadway hit STOMP at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in Louisville, KY

ECHS offers many dual-credit classes, one of which is Dance and Culture through Eastern Kentucky University.  A requirement of this course is that all students must view an artistic movement performance.

On this Veterans Day, the Estill County School District would like to thank the men and women of this great nation who have served in the military.  Also, Estill County has a proud tradition of men and women who have served in the armed forces defending our country.  Today we honor their service as well as all veterans across this great nation.

ECHS JRTOC Raider Team now 17th in Nation! 2016 JROTC Nationals Team Picture

The ECHS JROTC Raider Team competed at the National Competition on November 5th and 6th. The Raiders competed in events such as: 5k run, Physical Team Test, Gauntlet, Cross Country Rescue, and Rope Bridge.

No School - Monday & Tuesday

This is a reminder that there will be no school for students, in Estill County on Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th.  Monday is a teacher Equivalency Day.  All staff should report to their work locations.  Tuesday is Election Day, so please go out and exercise your right to vote.

Football Game Spectacular!

If you can't think of anything to do Friday night, we've got you covered! Come out to the Estill County High School Football game on Friday night to root for your ECHS "District Champ" Engineers take on Jackson County. Also cheer with the 14th Region Champ Cheerleaders to root our players on! Then watch the ECHS Engineer Marching band put on an unbelievable show that won them the CLASS 2A KENTUCKY STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIP! You will NOT want to miss all the excitement!

Free Paraeducator Course & Certification

Free Paraeducator Class and Certification.  The Estill County Adult Learning Center will offer paraeducator classes/certification beginning November 15, 2016.  This certificate will allow you to work in any school system across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

South Irvine wins the Attendance Banner in a David vs Goliath type upset. This is the first time in recent memory that South has taken the banner, so congratulations all around! Band is Selling Fruit Price List for the fruit the band is selling.

It's that time of year once again. Band is selling Navel Oranges, Tangelos, Juice Oranges, Mandarins and Grapefruit. They will be selling fruit until November 11. The fruit wil be distributed during the 2nd week in December. So please see a band member today!

Home Energy Assistance Program

Kentucky River Foothills will begin the “Subsidy” portion of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on Tuesday, November 1. LIHEAP provides financial assistance to income-eligible households with home heating costs through two programs: LIHEAP Subsidy (typically in November and December) and LIHEAP Crisis (typically January through March 31 or until all funds are expended).

On September 8th, six of our ECHS Leadership students attended the first East KY Youth Summit, that provided youth engagement and leadership development which are both key to the sustainability of the region

GEAR UP Takes ECHS Students to EKU The students, including Ms. Rader, rubbing Daniel Boone’s toe for good luck…an EKU tradition.

Thanks to GEAR UP, several ECHS students were able to visit EKU on September 16th  to tour the campus, eat lunch with college students, and then apply on-site using an application fee waiver!

FFA at Aldersgate Camp to Help Educate WII 4th Graders

On Friday, September 23, 12 FFA members traveled to Aldersgate Camp to educate West Irvine Intermediate School's 4th graders about forestry, wildlife, and soil components.

The Estill County High School Engineers crowned Homecoming Queen Olivia Snowden and her court Friday night. First runner-up was McKinley Meek, and second runner-up was Jaedyn Webster. Junior Princess was Alexis Waterson. Sophomore Princess was Danielle Sullivan, and Freshman Princess was Elizabeth Tipton. Brent Wainscott was crowned Homecoming King at the post game dance.

Tuesday, 09/20/2016, is high attendance day across the state of Kentucky. Each of our schools will be competing against other schools in a regional and overall state competition. Last year, Estill County High School won region within their division, and West Irvine, barely missed in their category. Lets put Estill County on the map tomorrow and sweep this competition at the elementary, intermediate, middle and high school levels. In order to win, we need every student, parent, and guardian to make the commitment to be at school tomorrow, on time, and ready to learn. Go Engineers!

Truancy Diversion

Estill County District Judge William "Bo" Leach addresses students at the Estill County High School. Judge Leach is explaining the Truancy Diversion program to the students. The Truancy Diversion (TDP) program is a joint effort between the high school and the local court system to improve student attendance. Referrals are made to the TDP program when a student reaches 6 unexcused absences during the school year.

Mr. Doug Brewer and myself have established a friendly competition to see which school has the best attendance week by week. Latest Results from Testing at the Blue Ridge Landfill

Over the past 6 months, CHFS, EEC, and others have collected and analyzed a great deal of data, and have jointly concluded that there is no evidence to suggest that waste containing TENORM disposed at the Blue Ridge Landfill has impacted any areas outside the landfill.

On Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Estill County High School, our staff participated in an “All Aboard” – Opening Day Celebration.  We were humbled by the number of community partners and vendors who participated and made the event a success.

2016 -2017 School Year Dress Code

The following guidelines for student dress are necessary to insure minimal disruptions to the educational process.  The following are not allowed:

Freshman Orientation

Parent's of freshmen, this is a reminder that on Friday, July 29th, there is a mandatory freshman orientation at the high school, that starts at 6:00 PM. It is important that both parents and students attend this introductory information meeting. Please contact the high school if you have any questions.

Transportation Department Meeting

All transportation personnel should be aware that an 8-Hour Update training will be held this Thursday, July 28th.  Drivers will be involved from 8:00–5:00.

The training will be held in the High School auditorium, with donuts and coffee being served beginning at 7:30.  The training will begin promptly at 8:00.  Lunch will be provided.

Bus Assistants should report at 1:00.

On Wednesday, June 8, eight FFA members traveled to Lexington, KY to compete in the state agriscience fair competition. These students were (left to right) Ashley Stone, Haley Dixon, Scarlett O’Hair, Hannah Parks, MyRayah Rawlins, and Hannah Patrick. Each student developed a science project that had an agricultural spin.
