Alex Britton received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and his Master's in Instrumental Conducting from Eastern Kentucky University. He is currently the Band Director at Estill County Middle School and Assistant Band Director at the Estill County High School. Alex team teaches the Marching and Pep Bands with colleague, and Band Director, Jason Bowles. As Assistant Director of the Marching Band, he has helped take the band to the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Finals Marching Band Competition where the band has placed 2nd in Class 2A in 2017, 2nd in Class 2A in 2018, and 2nd in Class 3A in 2019. He has also helped take the band to Bands of America (BOA) Grand Nationals where the band placed 2nd in the nation in Class 1A. As Middle School Director, Britton has had many students participate in events such as: EKU Honor Band, Bluegrass Honor Band, All-District Band, and Middle School All-State Band; many of his students have held some of the top positions in those bands. He has also received consistent Distinguished Ratings at Large Ensemble Assessment with his 6th grade bands and his 7th and 8th grade combined bands. In January 2020 he will receive the "Mountain Mover of the Month" award from the Estill County School District which recognizes staff members of the district that "go far beyond the call of duty."
He was an Itenerant Band Director at the Harlan County Public Schools for 1.5 years. There he was the Head Director of the High School Marching Band and Pep Band, co-taught the High School Concert Band, and was also the Band Director at James A. Cawood Middle School and Wallins Middle School Bands. Alex was also a Graduate Assistant for 2 years at EKU. He assisted the Eastern Kentucky University Marching Band, Pep Bands, Concert Band, and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
During his Graduate studies, Alex was the Graduate Conductor of the EKU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, EKU Concert Band, and EKU Pep Band. During his undergraduate degree, Alex was Principal Euphonist for the EKU Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Marching Band, Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble, and trombonist in the Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Band. He has served as Section Leader and Secretary in the EKU Marching Band. He has also performed in the London Community Band Annual Patriotic Concerts, Bluegrass Wind Ensemble, Madison County Brass Quintet, Madison Brass and Friends, and Madison Co. Community Band Holiday Brass. He has also performed in the Kentucky Music Educators Association Intercollegiate Band 2 consecutive years.
Alex has worked for the Bourbon County Marching Band, serving as low brass instructor, brass caption head, drumline assistant, and field staff for the past five years. He has also worked for the George Rogers Clark High School Marching Band, serving as low brass instructor, drumline visual assistant, and field staff. He has also worked band camp for Madison Central High School, Harlan Indepenent High School, Pineville High School, and John Hardin High School. Alex has worked the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp for the past three years, serving both counselor and head counselor positions,. Alex is also a private lessons teacher, instructing trombone, euphonium, and tuba in various public schools.
As a conductor, Alex's has conducted the Madison Middle School 6-8 Grade Bands at the KMEA Festival Evaluation, guest conducted the Madison Middle Spring Pops Concert 2013, and the Madison Central Wind Ensemble at their 2013 Spring Concert. He has also guest conducted the George Rogers Clark Wind Ensemble and Madison Central Freshmen Band. Alex's judging experience includes the KMEA District 11 Middle School Honor Band Auditions 2017 and 2018, KMEA District 11 All-State Band Tryouts Round 1 2017 and 2018, the All-Regional Band Auditions 2017 and 2018, the Southeastern Kentucky All-Festival Band Auditions for Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, and Euphonium 2016. Alex was also a Room Protoc for the Kentucky All-Regional Auditions 2016, the EKU Volleyball and Basketball Band Auditions 2013-2015, EKU High School Honor Band Tuba and Euphonium Auditions 2012, the Madison County All-County Middle School Auditions for Trombone, Tuba, and Euphonium 2013.
Alex is a proud member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a member of NAfME (the National Association for Music Education) and a member of KMEA (Kentucky Music Educators Association). He regularly attends the KMEA Professional Conference and has also attended the Conn Selmer Institute, the Marching Music Academy for Teachers and Instructors, and The Midwest Clinic for music educators. Alex's future plans include a "beginning band" method book, which will be a collaborative effort between Alex and many of his close colleagues in the field of music. The book will incorporate many strategies that will help beginners and professionals alike.
