FEBRUARY  SR.  CALENDAR

General:

**VERY  IMPORTANT:  The Financial Aid Parent Workshop will be on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. in the ECHS new computer lab!!  “TRY” to have your tax forms completed by that time and bring them with you to this meeting.  Certain questions refer you to your income tax return for the answers.  However, even if you do not have them completed, the workshop should still prove to be beneficial for everyone!!  I will be passing out a worksheet to help you be better prepared for the meeting, be sure and have your kids bring that home to you so that you can preview it and then bring it with you.  Also, the income tax forms must be completed to get all of the answers for the “FAFSA” form - but you do not have to mail the tax forms in until the normal April 15 deadline if you do not want to.  EACH college has its own priority deadline which is much earlier than that though, check your “Getting In” book for your college’s deadline, but the state of KY’s priority deadline is March 15.  You REALLY want to meet this deadline.  Get your FAFSA done on the web ASAP for top consideration!!  You can see the form online at:  www.fafsa.ed.gov       If you really need a paper form to file, then “you” must call and request the paper form; I cannot get them.  Again, with filing electronically on the web, you and your student will need a PIN number that will be used as your electronic signature; apply for this PIN number online at:  www.pin.ed.gov

**Seniors, be sure to read this calendar very carefully every month!!  Watch for scholarships that you meet the criteria for AND apply!!  When you see something you are interested in, drop by the Guidance Office and get the application.

**If you are considering the National Business College , Spencerian College or Nashville Auto Diesel College , apply for the “Imagine America Scholarship” (worth $1000) online at:  www.petersons.com/cca    -- click on “Career Schools,” and follow the directions from there.

 ** UK ’s Dept. of Mining Engineering Scholarships are now available.  The guidelines are not very strict -- so if you are interested, see Mrs. Neal for more information.

 **UT’s Nuclear & Radiological Engineering Program has scholarships available; see Mrs. Neal for more information.

 **Scholarships for Military Children are available at:  www.commissaries.com OR at fisherhouse.org - $1500 scholarships offered to students with a minimum 3.0 GPA  

 ** Sullivan University ’s nationally-recognized Culinary Arts Program is at Lexington ’s campus!  This is one of the top 4 culinary arts programs in the USA !! 

**U of L’s Dental School offers newest Bachelor Degree:  BS in Dental Hygiene!!

 **We will be having a presentation here on Feb. 10.  Those seniors in attendance will then be eligible to apply for a $1000 scholarship.  The title of the presentation is “Making College Count.”

**Seniors interested in attending UK should go to:  www.uky.edu/academicscholarships/    There is a link from this page to the various departmental or college scholarships!  Many more scholarships are available above and beyond the “university-wide scholarships.”  Check this out if you are going to UK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feb. 1    EKU’s Honors Program Application Deadline (all your college books are provided for you free, and they offer many other wonderful opportunities to students who participate in   this program.)

Feb. 1    UK ’s deadline to apply for the athletic trainer program.  UK is looking for students who are interested in working as a student athletic trainer.  The goal is to find students who              are  interested in a career in the medical field and expose them to the profession of athletic training  and sports medicine.  Scholarships are available after the student has completed

**LOCALLY-SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS:  These applications will be ready by the end of the month!!  I will go into all the Sr. English classes and give the seniors a list of all of the scholarships which are available!!  I will discuss with the students what the requirements for each are and answer any questions which arise.  THEN it is the student’s responsibility to drop by my office and get the applications.  The deadline for returning these will probably be sometime in April; watch next month’s calendar for the exact date. 

**Sullivan University’s next quarter of classes begin this mongh!!  Again students can take a class for free in their Jump Start Program.  For more information, call Wendy at 1-800-467-6281

March 1     KY Assoc. of Pupil Transportation (KAPT) Application Deadline, $1000, parents must be  employed by the school transportation system with a family income less than $55,000 last year.

March 3    PEPP Application Deadline for U of L or UK.  This wonderful summer program for                        

                 students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or dentistry is a MUST!! (4 1/2 weeks)
